Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has added its voice to the growing calls for justice and accountability after the recent assault on journalist Latif Iddrisu of JoyNews.

The incident occurred at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra, where the journalist was attacked while performing his professional duties.

HRRG condemns this act of violence, describing it as a blatant violation of press freedom, human rights, and the safety of journalists in Ghana.

The organization emphasizes that such attacks undermine the foundation of a healthy democracy and threaten the recognition of freedom of expression protected under Article 162 of Ghana’s Constitution.

The group urges the Ghanaian authorities to conduct a swift, transparent investigation and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable without delay.

“Justice must be served, and the safety of journalists must be guaranteed to foster an environment where media practitioners can operate without fear of threats or harm,” the statement underscores.

HRRG calls on the Inspector General of Police, the President, and other relevant authorities to prioritize this matter, implement effective measures to prevent future incidents, and protect journalists in the line of duty.

The organization also appeals to political entities, civil society groups, media associations, and the public to stand united against the rising trend of violence and intimidation targeting journalists.

It affirms that a free and safe press is essential to Ghana’s democratic development.

Expressing sympathy with Latif Iddrisu and his family, HRRG vows to closely monitor the case and collaborate with stakeholders to advocate for justice, accountability, and the protection of journalists’ rights across Ghana.
