Kumasi, Ghana – The Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) is calling for immediate action and justice following a brutal homophobic assault on a teenage boy identified as Kofi-A in the Atonsu area of Kumasi.

The incident, which reportedly occurred between April 29 and May 1, 2025, involved a group of young men who allegedly tricked the victim into a room before launching a violent attack. According to reports, the perpetrators filmed the assault while subjecting the boy to physical abuse, claiming they intended to “beat the gay out of him.”

The victim’s mother confirmed that her son has since made multiple suicide attempts due to the psychological trauma resulting from the incident.

In a statement issued on Thursday, HRRG expressed deep concern over the attack and condemned what it described as a “blatant act of hate-fueled violence.”

“This is a clear violation of Kofi’s basic human rights. No individual should be subjected to violence because of their perceived sexual orientation,” the organization stated.

HRRG is urging law enforcement and relevant authorities to:

  • Investigate the incident thoroughly, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they are prosecuted.
  • Provide immediate protection and psychosocial support for the victim and his family.
  • Ensure access to legal aid and rehabilitation services to support the victim’s recovery.

The organization emphasized the urgent need for stronger protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana, warning that impunity for such attacks fosters a dangerous environment of intolerance and fear.

Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., HRRG noted: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The group also echoed Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s warning that “being neutral in situations of injustice is choosing the side of the oppressor.”

HRRG concluded its statement by calling on government agencies, human rights organizations, and the public to unite in condemning acts of hate and protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens.
