Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has welcomed the swift police response to two recent human rights abuses — a brutal homophobic assault in Kumasi and a violent attack on a journalist in Accra — following press statements and public outcry.

The Ghana Police Service, under the leadership of Inspector-General Christian Tetteh Yohuno, moved promptly to arrest suspects in both cases.

This decisive action followed HRRG’s immediate press releases, which sounded the alarm and helped galvanize public and institutional response.

When Advocacy Drives Action

It was HRRG’s bold and timely press statement that first brought national attention to the plight of Kofi, a young man who survived a horrific homophobic attack in Atonsu, Kumasi.

HRRG’s advocacy helped mobilize civil society and law enforcement to secure Kofi’s safety and ensure the wheels of justice were set in motion.

Through coordinated efforts, Kofi is now receiving protection and medical care. “His safety and recovery are paramount,” HRRG emphasized. “Justice must follow for every individual responsible for this cruel act.”

Standing Up for Press Freedom

Likewise, HRRG’s firm condemnation of the violent assault on Latif Iddrisu, a JoyNews journalist attacked at the EOCO Headquarters in Accra, helped intensify pressure for a proper investigation. While one suspect has been arrested, HRRG insists that full accountability must be pursued.

“This is not just about Latif,” the organization noted. “This is about protecting press freedom, the very foundation of our democracy.”

From Words to Impact

These developments highlight HRRG’s growing reputation as a frontline force for justice in Ghana. Their advocacy is not symbolic — it’s strategic and results-driven.

“We didn’t issue statements for the sake of headlines — we issued them to drive action, and action followed,” said HRRG Executive Director, Dr. Joseph Wemakor.
“This is what meaningful advocacy looks like: speaking truth to power and staying committed until results are achieved.”

A Call for Relentless Accountability

While HRRG lauds the police’s swift actions, it urges law enforcement to remain firm and consistent in delivering justice for all — regardless of gender, identity, or profession.

As a dedicated media and human rights NGO, HRRG continues to lead from the front, reminding the nation and its institutions that human dignity and justice must never be negotiable.
