As part of initiatives geared towards enhancing the global plastic treaty and its implications for Ghana, the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), GAYO GHANA Campus Eco-Clubs, the Human Rights Reporters Ghana-NGO, Ako Foundation and Africa for Zero Waste have held 1-day consultative meeting in Accra on Friday May 12, 2023.

The purpose of the gathering was to create awareness among the media and other agents of change, build their capacities for effective communication of the treaty process and implications among others towards enhancing the global plastic treaty process ahead of the UN Environment Pre Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee Consultation Meeting

The meeting among other things laid emphasis on advocating for the implementation of specific targets and measures aimed at halting the importation, production, and use of single use plastics in Ghana.

The participants, during a brainstorming session strongly highlighted the need to enhance wastemanagement systems and promote sustainable production and consumption patterns, including the adoption of refill and reuse systems.

A significant aspect of the discussion revolved around the concept of strategic location and brand audits which was identified as a powerful campaign tool.

It is hoped that by conducting audits of producers in strategic locations, there’s possibility to shine a spotlight on their practices, thereby sparking meaningful discussions in the media and encouraging the public to push manufacturers to demonstrate their commitment to the plastic treaty and the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the end of the day, the participants have demonstrated their committments in support of the global plastic treaty agenda and were duly satisfied to have contributed their insights and ideas to the gathering, as it signifies a forward step in the collective efforts of stakeholders towards addressing the plastic pollution crisis the country is faced with.

It is hoped that the progress made so far will continue to foster stronger collaborations among the stakeholders to create a cleaner and greener future for generations to come.
