Seoul’s New UN Ambassador urges South Korea to co-sponsor North Korea human rights resolution

NEW YORK-Ambassador Hwang Joon-kook, Seoul’s new Ambassador to the United Nations has stressed the need for South Korea to co-sponsor an annual resolution to name and shame North Korea for its human rights violations and equally urge the regime to ameliorate the situation

He made this known speaking in interview with Yonhap News Agency on last Sunday

According to Hwang, the North Korean human rights is a “very important issue in terms of safeguarding universal values.”

He furthered: “For the past few years, we have been clearly passive in addressing the resolution on North Korean human rights … this has to return to normal,”.

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has vehemently criticized human rights violations by the North Korea for the 20th consecutive year since 2003 as it espoused a resolution.

However, South Korea is yet partake as a co-sponsor of the resolution since 2019 despite efforts to circumvent tensions with the North and resume inter-Korean dialogue under the erstwhile liberal government.

The Seoul’s new UN Ambassador likely intends to co-sponsor the resolution as early as next year since he was appointment as the first ambassador to the UN under the conventional Yoon Suk-yeol administration in July.

In a related development calls by Western countries intensifies for the UN Human Rights Council to codemn China and initiate further investigations into the abuse of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. The UN Human Rights Council is currently weighing accusation of China on ‘crimes against humanity’ which has also been described by the US as “genocide”.
